10 tips for choosing orthopedic mattress

A high-quality orthopedic mattress is an opportunity to ensure the correct position of the spine during rest. Its use is recommended in the presence of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, as well as for their prevention. We studied the opinions of people and the opinions of specialists in order to prepare useful practical advice for you, allowing you to choose the best orthopedic mattress.

Design

Spring block: needed or not?

All mattresses with orthopedic properties are divided into 2 groups:

Springless. The inner part of such products is made of elastic, but elastic material (for example, latex or cotton). This category includes air as well as flotation mattresses filled with water. Springless products are very comfortable to use.

Spring. Depending on the design, these mattresses are divided into two large groups, each of them has its own characteristics:

  • Dependent ("bonnel"). These springs in their form reproduce traditional barrels, tightly connected to each other. The products equipped with dependent blocks do not have hardness zones, therefore they deform and creak with time;
  • Independent. Their design is made of a huge number of independent springs. They are not connected in a single frame, therefore they provide excellent support for the spine, even in the elderly. Such products do not create a “wave” effect, which is especially important for double beds.

To choose a mattress equipped with an independent unit, consider the number of springs per 1 m2. The more of them, the more comfortable the product is to use. Standard number - 256 / m2. Most inexpensive mattresses are equipped with exactly this number of springs.

However, you can choose a new generation of models. They have a special multi-pack unit, in which the number of springs reaches 500 / m2. They are much more convenient and comfortable to use. In addition, there are mattresses with orthopedic block "micro", in them the number of springs is 1000 / m2.

Fillers

Natural or synthetic: which ones are appropriate?

The degree of rigidity of the mattress, as well as other important characteristics: elasticity, resistance to deformation and ease of use depend on the type of filler used.

The most common materials used as fillers are:

Latex. Natural material made from the juice of rubber plants. Its characteristic feature is increased elasticity, so it is used to fill soft mattresses and products of medium hardness.

Coconut coir. It provides the optimum balance of stiffness and comfort. The material does not interfere with air circulation and does not lose its shape over time. Most manufacturers use koyru, pretreated with latex, for filling mattresses.

Wool. Differs in remarkable heat-insulating properties therefore it is usually used in bilateral products ("winter-summer"). Wool fiber makes springless mattress more elastic, warm and comfortable.

Seaweed. 100% ecological filler with excellent orthopedic effect. Dried seaweed contains iodine and other useful elements, thanks to which the rest on the mattress will be not only convenient, but also as healthy as possible.

Cotton. It is pre-processed to the state of the thinnest cobweb, which is then rolled up in several layers. Cotton fiber is the best insulation that can make the mattress soft and very comfortable.

Hi-tech polyurethane foam. A filler that has a memory effect that remembers the contours and outlines of your body.It provides excellent support for the spine as well as muscles, without obstructing blood circulation.

Case

What should be the case?

The cover is an integral part of each mattress. It determines not only the appearance of the product, but also its orthopedic properties. The case consists of several layers: outer fabric, inner filler and durable lining.

The most practical covers are made of jacquard, characterized by high density and rigidity. If you prefer softer products, then choose models from knitted materials. Judging by the reviews, they are easy to wash and are highly durable.

When buying an orthopedic mattress, immediately select a mattress pad. It plays the role of a second cover, protecting the product from pollution, water and premature wear. Mattress is fixed with special rubber bands located in the corners of the mattress, or closed on the sides.

We recommend choosing a second case of waterproof fabric (especially important for newborns and children of preschool age). Mattress covers can be easily removed and erased at home, so they are suitable even for those who suffer from allergic reactions to dust.

Age criterion

How to choose a mattress according to your age?

Buying an orthopedic mattress is a complicated matter, since it is important to take into account your own height, body type, age and even health status when choosing:

Newborns, toddlers and preschool children. The best solution is a hard mattress filled with natural fiber. Choose springless models only. Well, if the product will be equipped with handles, providing convenient removal and flipping.

Teens and adults up to 25 years. All this time, the human body grows and develops, so for the formation of a correct posture we recommend choosing hard or medium-hard mattresses. They contribute to better spinal support.

Adults. For people 25 years and older, you should choose a mattress, based on your own preference. No specific requirements apply to this age.

Elderly. The older the person, the softer the mattress should be. Experts recommend that older people choose soft orthopedic products. They will provide complete rest without discomfort and pain in the back.

Mattress dimensions

Width, length and diameter

Width. One of the most important indicators in the selection of orthopedic mattress. Conventionally, all models are divided into single and double. Width variations are many: from 80 to 200 cm. Custom-made products can be made in atypical sizes.

The standard width of economical single mattresses is 80 cm, double - 140 cm. In order not to feel cramped during sleep, we recommend choosing products of slightly larger parameters (on average, + 10-15 cm to standard width).

If you are accustomed to occupy the maximum space during the rest, then pay attention to the single mattresses 120 cm and double 200 cm. Of course, measure the width of your bed before buying.

Length. The most common parameters are 200, 195, and 190 cm. A 200 cm long is considered a universal length for double beds. Non-standard parameters are found in the lines of a few manufacturers and range from 120 to 140 cm.

Note! To make your stay as comfortable as possible, we recommend that you choose orthopedic mattresses that are at least 10 cm longer than your height.

Diameter. This parameter is important for round mattresses. The most versatile diameter is 220 cm (for a double bed). The remaining parameters are less common, they are difficult to find.

Degree of rigidity

Soft or hard mattresses: which is better?

The fact that you will feel the rigidity of the product, is largely determined by your weight. Thin is more comfortable to sleep on a soft mattress, but more rigid people will suit perfectly hard orthopedic constructions.

Sleeping weight

Degree of rigidity

Up to 50 kg

Soft

From 50 to 70 kg

Moderately soft

From 70 to 90 kg

Average

90 to 100 kg

Moderately hard

From 100 kg

Hard

If you can not decide, experts recommend choosing models with several indicators of rigidity, i.e.one area for such mattresses is much softer than the second. A great option also for those situations where two people rest on a double bed, having a significant difference in weight or physique.

Height

How to determine the height of the mattress?

Height is one of the key criteria that is important to consider when selecting the perfect orthopedic mattress. As a rule, the thickness of one-sided products without a spring block is less than that of double-sided ("winter-summer") models.

The higher the mattress, the more comfortable it is to lie on it. Experts explain this by saying that under the weight of a sleeping person the product bends, and the deeper the deflection, the more comfortable the rest. Naturally, a high mattress bends many times more than a low one.

Manufacturers offer models of any height: from 3 to 30 cm. Products with a minimum thickness (3-4 cm) are usually used as mattress covers. Full mattresses are recognized models, whose height is 8-10 cm or more.

Weight per bed

What is the maximum weight the mattress can support?

When buying an orthopedic mattress, it is necessary to take into account the weight allowed for 1 bed. Manufacturers always indicate it in the instructions, implying this value for one person on a double bed.

We recommend to choose mattresses, the permissible load on which exceeds your weight by at least 10 kg. For example, if you weigh 70 kg, then the maximum load should be at least 80 kg. By neglecting this parameter, you risk the durability of the mattress.

Cost of

How much does a quality mattress cost?

A quality mattress will never be cheap. The materials used in its manufacture comply with the requirements of durability and reliability. For this reason, their purchase requires large investments and must be justified.

The average cost of mattresses equipped with an independent spring unit, starts from 10 000 rubles. However, keep in mind that the use of higher quality natural fillers and an increased number of springs per 1 m2 significantly increases this value.

Double mattresses from polyurethane foam without springs will cost 10 000-12 000 rubles. The cost of good models with latex filling starts from 15,000 rubles. At 5 000-7 000 rubles. will be more expensive mattresses, the manufacture of which uses a combination of several materials.

Manufacturer

Who offers the best quality mattresses?

Quality orthopedic mattresses can be purchased only from reliable Russian or foreign manufacturers. Do not choose products for which the seller can not provide the appropriate Certificates! Otherwise, you risk acquiring a regular mattress of dubious quality, not an orthopedic one.

The most popular manufacturers, judging by the customer reviews:

  • Beautyson (Russia). The company produces not only orthopedic mattresses, but also other products: covers, pillows, etc. When assembling products, the manufacturer uses the method of mechanical assembly without using glue;
  • Benartti (Russia). This company specializes in the manufacture of orthopedic mattresses using unique Italian technologies. All products are available in different lines, each of which has its own distinctive features;
  • DreamLine (Russia). The brand offers orthopedic mattresses and other goods for a comfortable stay. The advantage of the company is the manufacture of products of atypical sizes and the use of absolutely safe adhesives.

Other popular manufacturers include Honnemed, Diamond Rush, Comfort Line, Lineaflex and Laneve.
